UCSD Latino Studies Research Initiative, Summer Term 2009

The UCSD Latino Studies Research Initiative (LSRI—formerly the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity) is soliciting proposals from UCSD faculty and graduate students engaged in research in the area of interdisciplinary Latino studies to fund research projects for the summer 2008 term. Funded under the auspices of the University of California Committee on Latino Research (UCCLR), LSRI is part of a UC system-wide effort intended to support interdisciplinary research, information dissemination, and publication activities of UCSD faculty and graduate students engaged either in either primary or comparative research on the United States ' burgeoning pan-Latino population. While intended to fund work focused on Latinos in California and the United States , LSRI also encourages submission of proposals that have a transnational focus as well.

The LSRI Steering Committee will make awards of $3000 for successful UCSD faculty applicants and $2000 for graduate student applicants. Priority will be given to first-time applicants.

Applicants should send a current CV along with a 3-5 page research proposal describing the proposed project, research methodology, anticipated publication venue or dissertation project, contact information, (and for graduate applicants, a letter of recommendation from your main advisor) to David G. Gutiérrez, Chair—LSRI Steering Committee, c/o Department of History, MC 0104 by May 22, 2009. Research awards will be announced before the end of the spring term. The Jorge Perez-Lopez Student Award Competition

ASCE Student Award Committee is accepting nominations for the Jorge Perez-Lopez Student Award Competition. Anyone can nominate original papers authored by undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. The papers should address topics related to Cuba's domestic issues, its foreign relations, Cuban Americans or Cuba in comparative perspectives. At a minimum, papers are expected to outline a thesis statement and present evidence or data supporting it. All nominations ranging from 15-20 must follow one of the standard academic writing and citations styles. Self nominations are also welcomed. All correspondences must be accompanied by a letter stating the name, school affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and email of the nominee as well as a brief statement describing the merits of the nomination. Small Grants Program for Research and Publishing Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP)

In order to support scientific research on public opinion, electoral behavior and regional political culture the Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP), with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is opening a competition for scholars world-wide at public and private institutions, to compete for small grants in the field of democracy in Latina America. Every project eligible for a grant must have as its basis the analysis of at least one of the databases in the LAPOP files. Southwest Airlines and The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Offer College Students Free Travel

Southwest Airlines, in conjunction with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), kicks off its annual educational travel award program -- "Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success." In celebration of the program's third year, Southwest Airlines is increasing the number of roundtrip airline tickets it will award to the winners. Through this national education initiative, Southwest will provide roundtrip tickets to undergraduate and graduate students across the country with a socio-economic need and who travel away from home to pursue a higher education. Fulbright Grant

You have the opportunity to apply for a grant to live, study, or do research in another country for an academic year.
