Scholarships / Fellowships/Grants:
Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program
The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from eligible countries preparing a doctoral thesis. Research grants cover residence costs for a 5 to 10 month period in a renowned university or research center. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers.
Who Can Apply?
Only lecturers and researchers from eligible countries working on their doctoral thesis can apply for the fellowship. Candidates should be under 45 years, and have completed any course work or exams required for their doctoral program.
What Does the Program Support?
The purpose of the grant is to help fellows advance their doctoral research work through a residency period of five to ten months in a host institution in a country other than their home country or country of residence. During the research period at the host institution, the fellows are expected to have access to essential resources such as reference books and research publications, databases, and software; attend seminars and eventually courses; and to benefit by interacting with peers.
Host Institution
Candidates should be accepted or invited by a host institution which would designate an academic advisor to assist the fellow during his research period. Host institutions should also commit to provide the fellow with basic amenities such as office space and access to a computer, and to facilitate his/her research activities.
Fellowships Award
Eligible candidates are evaluated by external reviewers based on three criteria: academic performance, teaching and research experience, and relevance of the proposed research program. The top candidates are submitted to the Selection Committee, which includes World Bank senior experts and Donors representatives, for final selection. In addition to the merit criteria, the Selection Committee takes into account other factors such as availability of budget, geographical diversity and gender balance.
Grants
Candidates are requested to submit a budget for their fellowship covering the costs related to their research program: travel; insurance and living expenses; fees for courses and participation to seminars; and a books and software allowance. The grant amount to be awarded to each fellow will be decided by the Selection Committee. The maximum amount of the grant is US$ 25,000.

UCLA Library Research Grants 2008
Open to non-UCLA faculty and graduate students from two- and four-year institutions of higher learning who do not have ready access to substantial Latin American research resources. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, these grants are designed to allow researchers from other U.S. universities to use the vast resources of the Latin American collection at UCLA for a short-term. Four awards of up to $1500 each will be made to cover, lodging, transportation and meals. Grant recipients are expected to spend at least one week in Los Angeles. Upon completion of their stay, grant recipients are asked to provide receipts of all expenses for reimbursement, and a two to three page statement of research findings and of how their work at UCLA enhanced their project.
A committee consisting of faculty and library staff will award the grants based on relevance of the proposal to the holdings of the Libraries, the merits and significance of the project, and the qualifications of the applicant. Grants may be used from May through August 14, 2008.
Applications must be received by May 1, 2008. Successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter. All applications must be submitted online http://www.international.ucla.edu/lac/applyonline/
University of Florida Library Travel Grants
The University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies will again offer Library Travel Research Grants for summer 2008. These awards are funded by a Title VI National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Their purpose is to enable faculty researchers from other U.S. colleges and universities to use the extensive resources of the Latin American Collection in the University of Florida Libraries, thereby enhancing its value as a national resource.
As many as 10 awards of up to $750 each will be made to cover travel and living expenses. Awardees are expected to remain in Gainesville for at least one week and, following their stay, submit a brief (2-3 pp.) report on how their work at UF Libraries enriched their research project and offer suggestions for possible improvements of the Latin American Collection. Researchers’ work at the Latin American Collection may be undertaken at any time during the summer, starting May 15th, but must be completed by August 14, 2008. At least one grant will be made to a scholar from a Florida college or university. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
The UF Libraries Latin American Collection contains one of the finest collections of Latin American materials in the United States. It consists of over 400,000 volumes, some 50,000 reels of microfilm (many unique and very scarce), renowned newspaper and government-document holdings, and a growing access to computer-based electronic information resources.
Areas of collection focus include all disciplines, although literature, the humanities and the social sciences are best represented. All regions of Latin America are also well represented, with the Caribbean, Circum-Caribbean and Brazil having the deepest holdings, while the Andean and Southern Cone regions are developing strengths. Particularly noteworthy are the Collection's holdings on religion in the Americas, including Santeria, Rastafarianism and the Ralph Della Cava Collection on Padre Cícero & Brazilian popular religion. Other units of the UF Libraries also contain important resources and researchers are encouraged to utilize them as well. The UF Map Library houses approximately 500,000 maps and atlases, some 50,000 of which deal with Latin American topics. The Science Library has important book and journal holdings on agriculture, tropical conservation and development. The Special Collections Department has manuscript holdings such as the Rochambeau, Jeremie and the Braga Brothers Sugar Company papers.
Information on the UF Latin American Collection is available on the Internet at: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/lac. You can also e-mail Richard Phillips, Director of the Latin American Collection, at ricphil@uflib.ufl.edu for further information.
