Volunteer Opportunity/Intensive Language Program
El Nahual is an educational community center that is almost completely funded by its non-profit Spanish school. Located in the western highland city of Quetzaltenango, El Nahual provides free educational programs to some of the poorest communities in the area. We seek motivated students who desire both an intensive Spanish immersion experience and the opportunity to participate in grass-roots community development and social change through education.

Our Spanish school helps us fund a wonderful volunteer program, which attracts participants from all round the world. Unlike many other volunteer programs, we do not charge a fee to participate. Students at El Nahual are strongly encouraged to volunteer as English, art, mathematics and/or music teachers in our free educational programs for children and adults. Join the Witness for Peace (WFP) International Team for a two year term of service. Assistant Professor in Department of History, Arizona State University
The Department of History at Arizona State University (Tempe) seeks to make an appointment of an outstanding scholar in the field of Chicana/o history.  The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure track. 

Applicants must possess: a Ph.D. in United States History or related discipline, a deep grounding in the history of Mexican- origin people living in the United States, and a rigorous research program on Chicana/o history. Applicant must provide evidence of potential for excellence in research. Additional desired qualifications include evidence of potential for excellence in teaching; interest in: Mexican History; history of gender and sexuality; interdisciplinary research; training of students in related disciplines; and reading and speaking fluency in Spanish.  

The position is available beginning August 17, 2009, pending budgetary authorization. Salary and start-up will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. A pplicants must submit a cover letter addressing qualifications, current CV, writing sample, statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and three reference letters by Nov. 15, 2008.   Consideration of completed applications will begin December 1, 2008 and will continue on the 1st and 15th of each month thereafter until the search is closed. Instructor Position in Latin American Studies, Prescott College

We seek an innovative cross-disciplinary teacher for an Instructor position in Latin American Studies, from late September 2008 through early May 2009. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses potentially including Revolution: The Latin American Experience; Central America: History and Current Issues; Latin American History through Film; and Women & Power in Latin America. There also may be an opportunity to teach a course in the area of Ecological Economics as it relates to Latin America and elsewhere. Particular areas of academic emphasis that would be appropriate for this position include Political Economy, Border Studies, Environmental Studies, History, and/or Cultural Studies. The successful candidate will have experience with facilitating field courses; will be very knowledgeable about contemporary social and ecological issues in Latin America; and will be comfortable working with self-directed and highly motivated students in a small-class setting.
