University of California, Irvine Department of Chicano/Latino Studies
Temporary Part-Time Lecturer(s), 2008-2009


The Department of Chicano/Latino Studies is establishing a pool of qualified applicants to teach courses in Chicano/Latino Studies. Topics include: literature, arts, media, culture, history, society, labor, politics, law, gender, ethnicity, globalization, transnationalism, immigration, border issues, labor market participation, representation, and health outcomes in Chicano and Latino communities nationally and in Southern California.

Position(s) will be for Fall 2008, Winter and Spring 2009 quarters. The number of courses offered will depend on budget constraints and Departmental needs. Candidates must possess an M.A., Ph.D., or other advanced degree and have research or teaching experience that can contribute to the quality of Chicano/Latino Studies course offerings through effective teaching in a culturally diverse classroom.

Salary Range: $4,500- $6,000

Requirements: Ph.D. Degree preferred, but we will consider Masters degree holders in the field of Chicano/Latino Studies, ethnic studies, or related disciplines.

Vanderbilt University


Vanderbilt’s Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies seeks a
full-time staff Assistant Director. A growing Title VI National Resource
Center, we are looking for an energetic candidate with strong writing
and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate the
Center’s mission and goals to a variety of constituencies; and language
proficiency in Spanish (knowledge of Portuguese would be an additional
asset).

Duties will include writing grant proposals and preparing
performance reports for the university and federal funding agencies;
planning and coordinating program events; supervising student
assistants; writing news releases and other promotional materials; and
overseeing budgets of program accounts.

Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree (a Master’s is
desirable), ideally with knowledge of Latin America; be proficient in
Spanish (knowledge of Portuguese is desirable); and have experience
writing academic grants and reports.

Latin American Human Rights Education and Research Network (RedLEIDH)

JOB TITLE: Financial Officer/Technical Co-ordinator
The Latin American Human Rights Education and Research Network
(RedLEIDH) is a six year project which brings together York University's Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) and Osgoode Hall Law School in a new network of Latin American universities and civil society organizations to promote human rights education, applied research and capacity-building in the region. CIDA will fund activities until March 2010.
Responsibilities:

The Financial Officer/Technical Coordinator is part of a five-person management team based at York University that is responsible for the overall administration and implementation of the RedLEIDH project. The other members of the management team are the Project Coordinator/Project Assistant, the Program Assistant and the two project directors.

The Financial Officer/Technical Coordinator bears primary responsibility for the financial administration, planning and execution of the project and for the general coordination, development and implementation of internet-based systems.
While the current holder of the position combines skills in both finance and computer technology, we realize that this combination may be difficult to find and will consider proposals for part time positions in either finance or in technology.

Qualifications:
- Ability to prepare budgets and other financial and project planning documents -•Minimum 2-3 years related experience in financial management or project management
- Experience working with CIDA projects and experience working with York University preferred
- Experience in developing web portals, distance education tools (eg.
Moodle) and software and hardware requirements for same
- Familiarity with business programs including Excel and Word
- Excellent communication skills in English , including ability to write complex reports and communicate clearly with York and CIDA
- As all communication with partners is in Spanish, the individual must have an ability to read and communicate in Spanish, although absolute fluency in Spanish is not required
- Understanding of the political, economic, social and human rights context of Latin America and Canada-Latin America relations
- Ability to work collaboratively within the project team and with a variety of institutional partners in the region
- Strong organizational skills, a self-initiating work ethic, flexibility and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working in Latin America an asset
- Ability to travel in Latin America
Terms: 3 month probationary period and annual contracts renewable for the remainder of the project (approximately 2 years)
Work Hours: 5 days per week
Salary: Depending on experience, between $44,000 - $50,000, Benefits and a small raise after probationary period.
Start day: May 26 or as soon as possible.

Paid Internship Position Open at IIE Latin America

The Institute of International Education, Office for Latin America, has a unique opportunity available for qualified students or recent graduates to intern at the EducationUSA Advising Center in Mexico City during 2008. This opportunity is being offered outside of the regular application schedule and is available as early as February 2008 for a comprehensive six-month program.

The intern will work closely with the advising team at the largest EducationUSA Advising Center in Latin America, helping Mexican students research opportunities for U.S. study. The intern will also work closely with the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator (REAC) who provides leadership and expertise in educational advising issues to advising centers and U.S. Embassies throughout Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Minimum Requirements:
· Completion of at least three years of higher education in the U.S.
· Ability to communicate competently in both Spanish and English.
· Personal maturity as demonstrated by the ability to receive instruction and work on projects with limited supervision. Self-direction is essential, as is the ability to work with a small team.
