(Brazil)
Fullbright Scholar
Area of Expertise: Media and power, liberalism,
and cultural industry.
Country of Expertise: Brazil
Current Research Project: Gazzotti's research involves
the transformation of the Brazilian Press under the 1964-1985 military
rule. On one side, there was the official censorship, especially
hard between 1969 and 1978. On the other hand, the policies of development
fostered by the military allowed a rapid growth of the cultural
industry in Brazil. In this sense, the newspaper Jornal da Tarde
is a good case of the modern Brazilian cultural industry product
facing the hardships of censorship. The analysis aims to understand
the evolution of this newspaper in relation with two different processes:
(1) the political censorship, and (2) the cultural industry fostered
by the military governments. Moreover, the liberal ideology propagated
by the periodical is another focus of study when we try to found
out how a liberal newspaper can support a military coup.
