Charles Briggs, Director of the Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies (CILAS)
at the University of California, San Diego and Clara Mantini-Briggs, Visiting Scholar
at CILAS and former National Coordinator of the Dengue Fever Program in Venezuela will
be presented with the 2004 Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Bryce Book Award
for Stories in the Time of Cholera: Racial Profiling During a Medical Nightmare
(University of California Press, 2003). The book was recently published in Spanish,
Las historias en los tiempos del cólera.
The award will be presented on October 7, 2005 during the Association's XXV
International Congress annual conference in Las Vegas.
How can epidemics can kill so many in the 20th century? This book analyses the root
causes of the quick spread of cholera in the Orinoco Delta area of Venezuela. A
