About Violeta Parra
One of the few women on the forefront of the Nueva Canción (New Song) movement in Chile, Violeta Parra was a folklorist performer of both music and poetry. Nueva Canción was performed by both solo singer/songwriters and large folklore groups with songs that called for political and social change. By mixing the sound of older songs with new lyrics, this style of music spoke to many different generations.

In 1954 Parra established "La Carpa de la Reina", a Chilean peña promoting music performances and concerts while also serving as a social and cultural center for the community. Many of her songs featured the Charango, a high pitched guitar that quickly became associated with social protest in the Andean region. Seen as an articulation of radical challenge, the Charango was subsequently banned under Pinochet's regime.

Violeta Parra committed suicide in 1967 for unknown reasons.
